Winterizing Sanitizing
SYSTEM CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Allowing water to freeze in the system may result in damage to the pump and plumbing system.

Non-Toxic antifreeze for potable water may be used with Flojet pumps. Follow manufacturer's recommendations.
Refer to coach or equipment manufacturer's instructions for their specific winterizing and drainage procedures.

Do not use automotive antifreeze to winterize potable water systems. These solutions are highly toxic and may cause serious injury or death if ingested.

1. Drain the water tank. Open tank drain valve and plumbing drain valves if applicable. You may use the pump to drain the tank by opening all the faucets in the system. Allow the pump to operate until the tank is empty. Do not operate the pump more than 15 minutes continuously.
2. Open all faucets and flush the toilet to purge all the water from the pump and the plumbing system. Run the pump until no water is coming through the faucets. Turn power to the pump off. Be sure that all the water from the drain lines are drained.
3. Remove quick connect inlet and outlet fittings from the pump and turn the pump on to pump out remaining water from the pump head. Be sure to have a catch pan or a rag under the pump to prevent water from spilling onto the RV. Turn the pump off once the plumbing is empty. Leave the fittings disconnected from the pump until the system is ready to be used again. Make a note on your tank filler that the plumbing is not connected.
4. Be sure that all faucets are left open to protect against damage to the plumbing. Portable water systems require periodic maintenance to deliver a consistent flow of fresh water. Depending on use and the environment the system is subject to, sanitizing is recommended prior to storing and before using the water system after a period of storage. Systems with new components, or ones that have been subjected to contamination, should also be disinfected as follows:
NOTE: The sanitizing procedure is in conformance with the approved procedures of RVIA ANSI A119.2 and the US Public Health Service.
1. Use of the following methods to determine the amount of common household bleach needed to sanitize the tank.
1. A) Multiply “gallons of tank capacity” by 0.13; the result is the ounces of bleach needed to sanitize the tank.
1. B) Multiply “Liters of tank capacity” by 1.0; the result is the milliliters of bleach needed to sanitize the tank.
2. Mix into solution the proper amount of bleach within a container of water
3. Pour the solution (water/bleach) into the tank and fill the tank with potable water.
4. Open ALL faucets (hot and cold) allowing the water to run until the distinct odor of chlorine is detected.
5. The standard solution must have four (4) hours of contact time to disinfect completely. Doubling the solution concentration allows for contact time of one (1) hour.
6. When the contact time is completed, drain the tank. Refill with potable water and purge the plumbing of all sanitizing solution.

Does your local H.D. require a minimum Fresh water tank size?
This varies by your local health department, we do not know this information, check on this before ordering.

What percent larger does Gray tank need to be than Fresh tank?
This varies by your local health department, we do not know this information, check on this before ordering.

e.g. a 40 Gallon Fresh tank that must have a 15% larger Gray water tank would be a 46 Gallon tank.

How to find out the size you need. Multiply (fresh tank size) x 1.15 (1 and 15%) = Tank needed
30 x 1.15 = 34.50
33 x 1.15 = 37.95

30 x 1.50 (50%) = 45
33 x 1.50 = 49.5

I have only so much room how many gallons can I get in that space?
Please go to Water/Wastewater Math Calculator you can put your dimension in and it will tell you the volume of gallons.

How are the water tanks measured?

30 Gallon Tank - 34 ½” x 12” x 17 ½”

42 Gallon Water Tank Has Different Design

Where are the fittings located?
All tanks come with four fittings built into the tank. All fittings are located on one end of the tank, if you stand the tank with the tallest length facing up all fitting will be on this end.

Photo is same tank but color altered to see fittings clearly.

1 1/2" Balloon Fitting

The fitting will be closed off and can be used or left as is.
To use the fitting simply trim out the inside piece, a razor knife works well.

1/2" Female NPT Standard Fitting

Can the fittings be moved?
We only carry 1 1/2" Balloon Fittings and 1/2" fittings, these fittings can be placed in custom locations.
To have fittings moved you would need to fill out a design sheet such as the one listed below. There is an upgrade charge of $10 per fitting.

Email for PDF - Click for Larger Image

Can I cut a hole in the tank and glue another fitting in?
The fittings are not glued into the tanks. After the tank is formed the fitting is placed in a tool that spins the fitting and causes both the tank and the fitting to heat, melting the plastic.
The fitting is permanently mounted into the tank, no glues or other materials are used. Cutting the water tank voids any warranty.

Many people think that the fittings are glued in due to the residue left by putting the fittings in place, this is part of the material the tanks are made from and will flake off over time, this is not a glue.
Notice the cracks in the material, this is just a surface cracking and in no way effects the tank.

These tanks look thin are you sure they are safe?

All tanks will vary on thickness but on average they are .219 or 7/32" thick. The tanks will need to be braced and sit on a flat surface.
Tanks should not have anything set on top of them.

All water tanks we carry must be vented allowing air to move in and out when filling and emptying the tank.
You should NOT fill the tank from a direct city line (garden hose), this is not a safe option and could explode the tank causing serious damage.

Click for Larger Image

Can I stack the water tanks on top of each other?
No, you cannot place additional weight on the tanks. You will need to build a weight bearing shelf between the water tanks.

Do I need to brace the water tank
Yes, you will want to brace the water tank and have the tank sit on a level surface.

Can I set the tank up on end?
Yes, the tank can sit on any end, except the fittings, you will need to brace the tank and run a food grade hose down inside to reach the bottom of the tank.

Can I mount the tank under the trailer on the outside?
Yes, we recommend having the tank sit on a level surface such as plywood or sheet metal then bracing it with bars or straps, it is helpful to fully enclose the tank to prevent damage from rocks and debris during travel.
Be sure you check clearance to avoid having the tank removed on a speed bump or curb.
Some states require your gray water tank to be placed outside of your trailer in the event of an overflow. This varies by your local health department, we do not know this information, check on this before ordering.

Examples: It is recommend putting the tanks on a level surface, such as plywood, to prevent damage to tank.

WARNING You can not drain waste water onto the ground, be sure to dispose of waste water properly.

It is recommend putting the tanks on a level surface, such as plywood, to prevent damage to tank.

Can I put the water tank under the trailer or on the roof?
We do not recommend placing a water tank on the roof unless you have reinforced the roof. Water weighs around 8.3 pounds per gallon so a 40 Gallon water tank would weight around 332 pounds.

Can I put the water tank outside in the sun?
Each water tank is made from Medium Density Polyethlene (MDPE) Resin with a UV-8 stabilization, this is listed as long-term stabilization. We recommend enclosing your tank to get the longest use.

UV Codes:
UV0 (no UV protection)
UV8 (‘long’ term protection)
UV16 (‘longer’ term protection)

UV24 (exceptional protection)

WATER TANK PLUMBING

Have a certified technician install all parts to prevent product damage and personal injury.

All water tanks we carry must be vented allowing air to move in and out when filling and emptying the tank. You should NOT fill the tank from a direct city line (garden hose), this is not a safe option and could explode the tank causing serious damage.

When I get the tank what should I do first?
Sanitize each tank prior to use to remove any debris from the manufacturing process
Tanks are made in a warehouse wipe with a damp cloth to remove surface dust or scuffs

How do you vent the tank?
You will need to leave one fitting free to allow air to go out of the tank when being filled with water and air to go into the tank when being emptied of water. The easiest method is to use an outside fill dish.

We do not sell additional fittings
What fittings you need will vary by how you run your plumbing, please see examples below.
Consult a professional plumber if you are unaware of how to install tanks, fittings or water pump.

National Pipe Threads (NPT)

Pipe sizes do refer to physical dimensions, but the plumbing industry standard for the sizes of pipe is not always as straight-forward as measuring the pipe. Measuring the pipe will oftentimes mislead you into choosing the wrong pipe, so do take care. The "pipe thread size" as shown in column 3 of the table below is measured and based on the inside of the pipe. But, to actually determine the size of a pipe, the outside diameter of each pipe or fitting must be measured and compared to the table for size identification. For example, a 3/4" NPT pipe thread has an outside diameter of 1.050 inches. Each thread size has a defined number of threads per inch (TPI). The 3/4" NPT pipe thread has 14 threads per inch. Both the TPI (threads per inch) and OD (outside diameter) of the thread are required for positive identification of thread size because several sizes have the same TPI.
pipe thread specifications
Male threads: Measure the outside diameter of the large portion of the thread at "A"; Find figure nearest this dimension in column 1 or 2 of chart. The dimension in column 3 will be your nominal pipe thread size.
Female Threads: Measure top diameter of thread at "B"; Find figure nearest this dimension in column 1 or 2 of chart. The dimension in column 3 will be your nominal pipe thread size.

Suggestions on tank sanitation

1. Prepare a chlorine solution using one gallon of water and a ¼ cup of household bleach (5% sodium hypochlorite solution) *DO NOT USE FRESH SCENT OR ANY SCENT ENHANCED BLEACH*.
Never mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners.
Open windows and doors to get fresh air when you use bleach.
With tank empty, pour chlorine solution into tank. Use one gallon of solution for each 15 gallons of tank capacity.

2. Complete filling of tank with fresh water.
3. Allow to stand for three (3) hours
4. Drain and flush with potable fresh water.
Any residual chlorine odor will dissipate naturally.
